Beschreibung

What are the defining features of the world economy? How should one grasp the power relations in the political constitution of global capitalism? What kind of conflict dynamics arise from it? And how are states, multinational corporations and everyday practices enmeshed in it? This seminar aims at exploring these questions by making participants familiar with current debates in International Political Economy (IPE). We examine conceptual frames about power in the world economy, considering various traditions in IPE to capture structure and agency, and discuss selected themes to explore fault lines at the intersection of conflict, development and contemporary capitalism. The course uses input presentations, group discussions in flipped-classroom settings, films and guest lectures to inquire into themes such as economic sanctions, dependency and foreign aid, as well as environmental conflict and climate change. At the end of the seminar, participants will have gained profound knowledge on issues and actors in the global economy as well as the conflict dynamics that arise from them.
