Beschreibung

Universities are associated with fostering democracy and contributing to the societal ‘common good’ by promoting liberal thinking, knowledge-based reasoning as well as intellectual and material innovations. As such, universities advance a more tolerant, educated and open-minded populous. Although universities’ roles (i.e. public vs private funding, enrolling global vs local students, blue-sky vs applied research) have changed in the last decades, they continue to hold a key place in creating a more open, democratic society. In current times, however, these values—as well as others—are challenged by growing populist perspectives. Right-leaning populist groups have directly targeted universities, departments and/or individuals who promote ‘liberal’ perspectives. Sheltering under the tenant of academic freedom, perspectives such as anti-immigrant, nationalism, and anti-multiculturalism are expressed. This course will explore how various democratic countries’ are giving rise to populist groups, how this changing political climate is affecting universities, and how universities are responding to the populist challenges.
